Meet Janelle - of Digital Darling & - our Advisory Board!

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I am passionate about helping women-identifying small business owners thrive and reach their goals! Wether that be through planning events that build their community, or helping to strategize their marketing/social media plan and create a clear vision for their businesses.

What is your why? - Why do you create? What do you love about creating?

I create because it's my calling! Wether it be event planning, graphic design, illustration, baking, poetry... my soul longs to make something beautiful.

How did you get started?

I've been a writer and an artist my whole life. I fell in love with business when I was in my early 20s, working for young entrepreneurs and learning as much as I could from them. My ADHD often made me feel like it would be impossible for me to own a biz of my own. Eventually I met a woman who owned a marketing agency and she took me under her wing. I learned that marketing and corporate event planning is a great place to flex my creative muscle AND help other entrepreneurs get ahead. Best of both worlds!

If you could give your 16-year-old self some advice what would it be?

Don't be afraid to fail. I was a pretty brave kid, but I was also very aware of how other people perceived me. I love the quote;" What other people think of you is none of your business!" I'm still young(ish), but I no longer place a lot of value on how other people see me. I know that I'm awesome and that is enough. Each failure is just a step towards where you are meant to be.

Do you still get scared in your biz?

Of course! Doesn't everybody? I am currently in the middle of launching my first solo event for my business and I'm terrified! What if no one buys tickets? What if the venue isn't right? What if I fail? But like a said before, failure is not a bad thing,( Scary? yes, but not bad.) If it doesn't work out I will learn the lessons and make changes for next time.

What is the one tech support you couldn't live without?

I love Metricool for keeping all the IG account I manage accessible and organized. You can schedule your posts, check your analytics, and switch seamlessly from one social platform to another. Very handy for VAs, Social Media Managers and more!

What is one management support you can't live without?

My paper planner! Even though I live in a digital world, I need paper to make me feel in control. I've tried making the switch to a digital calendar and it's just not the same!

How do you feed your creativity?

As an Indigenous woman I feel very connected to the land. When I need to quiet my mind and awaken my soul, I head to the woods. Water, especially rivers, play an integral part of my life. Although sometimes I need just the opposite to fuel my creativity. I will head downtown, grab a coffee, and people watch until I feel that spark again.
