Charity Spotlight - Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter

Today we’d like to spotlight Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter and their efforts in being Manitoba’s first registered charity, NO-KILL animal shelter. This charity was selected by Amber - one of our Camp Rover Conference 2024 Speakers. If you didn’t already know this is something we do with each speaker we bring on; we want to give back to causes that matter to the people that matter to us.

You can read more about Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter in our interview with them below. We hope you can find a way - in whatever form - to give them support.

What does Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter focus on in their efforts to serve the community?

“The Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter receives no government support, and relies solely on the kindness & generosity of our community. Without your support, we could not help the hundreds of helpless animals we serve each year. Please consider donating in any way you can. There are so many ways you can help us continue our lifesaving work.

The Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter is Manitoba’s first registered charity, NO-KILL animal shelter.

Our Mission: The Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter is a non-profit charity committed to providing a euthanasia-free environment for unwanted animals through the provision of interim care and arrangement of adoptions to suitable owners.

Our Vision: The Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter aspires to a society in which pets are accorded the right to life and are recognized as beings with feelings that have the right to loving care.” - About Us, Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter (website)

How did Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter come to be?

“Since receiving charitable status in 1999, the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter has adopted out thousands of pets that were abandoned, unwanted, relinquished or needed to be rescued. The Shelter has found loving homes for all of these innocent animals, but the work is far from done. Over 200 pets are on a waiting list to come into the Shelter and it receives 80-100 calls per day from people who need to relinquish their pets for one reason or another. Some rescued animals stay for a day, some a week, some a month and some for a year or more.” - Donate, Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter (website)

What are the biggest challenges that Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter face?

“Operating a “NO-KILL” animal shelter means that any animal coming into the Shelter, stays at the Shelter and is cared for until a loving home can be found for it. There Is No Time Limit On Their Stay.

Each pet coming into the Shelter is health checked, receives all necessary medical attention and vaccinations by a qualified veterinarian and is either spayed or neutered when of age. Our average vet costs are $173 per day. Unlike other shelters, the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter is NOT funded in any way by the government or government agencies, it is strictly a non-profit charity. We rely solely on the generosity of the general public and people like you.” - Donate, Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter (website)

Do you have a current fundraiser or program you'd like to share with the Camp Rover Community?

“There are many ways to support The Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter! We have different programs that you can get involved in from volunteering to fundraising. We also have a Corporate Sponsorship program where we partner with local businesses to work together to help save more animals every day! And don’t forget, the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter is a registered charity, so all donations are tax-deductible.” - Help Now, Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter (website)

How can the Camp Rover Community give back to Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter? What needs do you need to be filled right now?

“Fostering!

What you should know about the foster program at the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter is that we are in need of people who are able to help care for an animal who might be sick, injured or recovering from giving birth. They need a quiet room to relax and heal with a little bit of TLC. All we ask is that you have a spare room to house the animals until they are strong enough to come back to the shelter to be adopted. The length of time varies with each situation.

The Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter provides all foster families with food, food and water dishes, a litter box and litter (for pregnant/lactating cats and their kittens), blankets and toys, and support in case of emergency or other unforeseen issues.” - Help Now, Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter (website)

Any closing thoughts or advice for the Camp Rover Community?

“Many people don’t realize that we carry everything you need for your pet right at the Shelter! Toys, treats, food, accessories, leashes, coats, collars, you name it, we’ve got it! When you purchase your pet supplies from the Winnipeg Pet Rescue retail store, 100% of all proceeds go directly back to the animals in our rescue still waiting for their forever homes. This is a very simple way that you can buy the supplies you would anyways, AND support the Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter.

While you’re at the shelter, consider buying a bag of our Nutrisource food and donating it back to the animals in need. That’s like a DOUBLE donation!” - Retail Store, Winnipeg Pet Rescue Shelter (website)
