Charity Spotlight - Fort Garry Women's Resource Centre

Today we’d like to spotlight Fort Garry Women's Resource Centre and their efforts in providing free support and services for all women, gender diverse people and children. This charity was selected by Teri Hofford - one of our Camp Rover Conference 2024 Speakers.

If you didn’t already know this is something we do with each speaker we bring on; we want to give back to causes that matter to the people that matter to us.

What does Fort Garry Women’s Resource Centre focus on in its efforts to serve the community?

Fort Garry Women’s Resource Centre is committed to creating a community where women, gender-diverse people & children are safe, healthy, valued and empowered.

Fort Garry Women’s Resource Centre is a not-for-profit, feminist organization supporting women and gender diverse people to engage in healthy life choices for themselves and their families through innovative and responsive programming and excellence in service.

In keeping with a feminist philosophy of supporting women and gender-diverse people and their right to be full and equal members of society, our aim is to provide women and gender-diverse people with information, referrals, outreach, supportive counselling, and public education workshops.” - Fort Garry Women’s Resource Centre (website)

How did Fort Garry Women’s Resource Centre come to be?

“In May of 1983, the dream of a Fort Garry Women’s Resource Centre (FGWRC) became a reality. The dream grew out of a small discussion group, whose members already knew one another through volunteer work, employment or participation in one of the downtown YWCA’s women’s programs. At the time, south Winnipeg was a rapidly expanding suburb, with about 12,000 adult women living in the area. The hope was that a resource centre in the Fort Garry area could offer a variety of services and be easily accessible for women in this part of the city.

Through FGWRC, it was hoped that women would learn about themselves, be given the chance to make positive changes and take control of their lives. As Nora Crichton, one of the original founding sisters noted, there was never a shortage of capable women to take part in running FGWRC. “All sorts of talented women kept coming forth (to fill new roles and vacancies). That’s the strength of the Centre.” - About Us, Fort Garry Women’s Resource Centre (website)
