Welcome here for the Camp Rover Book Club

Get cozy with a cup of tea and have a read on some of the books we think you’ll like over the next while through our suggestion via our Camp Rover Book Club.

Audio reading is still reading.

Books might not be your thing, but our Camp Rover Book Club is a bit more open format than “Here, read this book - you’ll like it”.

We want to make suggestions that are vetted by our Advisory Board, Founder (me, Amanda!), friends of Camp Rover, and our Speakers.

We’re not (yet) going to be doing any sort of met-up, but we would love to hear from you if you’ve liked any of the books we’ve suggested and are open to you sharing a review via your own Camp Rover Book Club post. (The more the marrier on the Camp Rover blog!)

So, here we are, it’s the new year, and there are SOO many books we can look back on that we enjoyed over the last 12 months. We’re going to start things off pretty light, and only a handful of books, but we’ll get more pointed on topics as we get closer to Camp Rover Conference 2024 (ehh!!!) to give you some great suggestions to prep you for the day.

Here are some “Must Reads”, “Worth Another Read”, or “Mindfully Consider” for our first Camp Rover Book Club post.

Quick Note:

Most of our books (we’re going to try our best to make that all!) are also available via audiobooks because we know the thought of sitting still and reading a book is 100% off the table for a lot of you; including me!

(Audio reading counts as reading - full stop. And, for me, doing something else at the same time actually helps me stay focused on what I’m hearing while keeping other parts of my mind and/or body busy with something else. Truly - really - right now I am writing this while Marshall reads When the Body Says No out loud).

Must Read-s

There are just SO many books we could suggest but it’s been a year for many of us so we’re going to start with a couple of novels this month.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

9/10 - I will say, this one took me a little bit to get into, but once I was into it I was IN. It’s an open-minded (for the time period it was written in) take on love over the years and a really easy read (if you’re new to novels this is a great one to start with).

Oona Out of Order

7/10 - It was a book club pick from my - Amanda’s - book club I’m personally a part of and I will say I never would have considered it on my own but I’m really great I read it. It’s a different take on time travel and I loved that it was about her and not just about love and struggle in traveling. It also offers interesting takes on how to reconcile aging.

Mindfully Consider

Some of these books I - Amanda - have on my books-to-consider list too. Know that I haven’t read all of them - yet - so I’ll report back once I have. The books I haven’t read are suggested by friends and fellow creatives; so we trust their judgement but can’t speak for all the content in each book.

We Have Always Been Here

6/10 - It didn’t get a lower rating because it wasn’t a good book, and the content wasn’t great (cause it is!) it was more for the writing and lack of depth in that we like to see in a memoir.

Romantic Comedy

9/10 - A suggestion from our friend and AB Member Amber.

Worth Another Read

I - Amanda - am not a huge fan of reading books more than once (Why? There is so much else I want to take in) but these are books that I’d touch again, and books that our Camp Rover Community have shared with us that they’re utterly in love with.

Steal Like An Artist

10/10 - I would read it again and again. And should do it once a year. He has two other books we think you’d really like as well (Show Your Work and Keep Going).

Hood Feminism

10/10 - I can’t say enough good things about this book. White people: Come to it ready to learn, be challenged, called out, and be given ways you can (and should) do better.

The Subtle Art of Not Giving A Fuck

10/10 - A very good read to get you toward just simply not giving a fuck about a lot of things you really shouldn’t care at all about.

I really enjoy his podcast as well. It’s a bit of a bro show sometimes, so a heads up on that, but for the most part, the content is amazing.
