Meet Our Panelists: Rachel of Rachel Dyan Web Design
Rachel is a funky, fun, engaging, and inspiring person (and new friend) whom I met at a networking event. We hit it off over bubbly, talks about good-fitting bras, and ADHD, our work and struggles with it too.
Here’s a bit more on Rachel through a little interview to get to know her.
What is the hardest part about what you do?
As a neurodivergent entrepreneur, the hardest part of what I do has nothing to do with the work itself (the work being web design.) The hardest part is being accountable to myself. I am my own boss - and while I think I'm pretty great to work for, sometimes my boss lets me get away with more than I should. Despite being in my 4th year of being a business owner, I still struggle with the absolute need for routine and structure (thank you, autism) and the subconscious desire for chaos that my dopamine-seeking brain provides (thank you, ADHD).
What is the all-time dream part of your job? The thing you still pinch yourself that you get to do? And, tell the people how often you actually get to do it.
We all choose what we do as entrepreneurs, usually because we LIKE what we do. The dreamiest part of what I do is just that - designing websites. Yes, I get a thrill each time I get to meet a new potential client, or when I launch a new website for someone, but the thing that feels right is when I'm in the creative space of designing a website. I get to do it as often as I get new clients!
If you could tell your Day 1, starting a biz self one thing what would it be?
Don't be too hard on yourself when you find you can't focus... you actually have ADHD and most of what you're going to try to help yourself is only going to frustrate you.
Someone wants to get into content creation & executive planning. What advice - from an expert - would have saved you a lot of time, sweat, and tears?
Invest in the resources! Being self-taught, the more I held off on investing a wildly small amount of money on things like coding resources and reference sheets, the more I was withholding from my clients. You do what you do because it tickles your brain the right way, so logically it makes sense to invest in the knowledge and resources to expand your talents.
Fun fact about you?
I work best on the floor, on a dog bed with a mini table. For real, I went to Costco once to look for a dog bed, not because I have a dog, but because I realized I love working on the floor, so I can fidget and move around. I took the giant, donut-shaped dog bed from the massive box, placed it on the ground, and proceeded to take my boots off and sit cross-legged. People walked past us, and my husband audibly asked, "So, do you think she'll like it?" as to imply we were looking for a bed for our "dog." Me. I'm the dog. That dog bed didn't work because it was actually TOO cushy, so now I work on an extra large memory foam Bedsüre dog bed.
Fav book? Fav show? Your All-time go-to movie while working?
I fall asleep to Friends, and have for the last... decade? I'll watch any rom-com while working. And while I'm a proficient reader, I don't read books. #ADHDproblems
Any closing thoughts for the Camp Rover Community?
There's a wild statistic out there that states that upwards of one-third of entrepreneurs are actually neurodivergent. I believe it's likely WAY more than that. Entrepreneurship is really just a self-development journey, one where you'll begin to understand and have more opportunity to figure out what works for YOU both in the way you earn a living and in your personal life and relationships. And if I can provide any insight, it's to ensure you approach that journey with compassion and patience for yourself.
