Charity Spotlight - Trans Health Klinic

Today we’d like to spotlight Trans Health Klinic and their efforts in providing consultation, medical, and psychosocial supports to gender diverse clients. This charity was selected by Christina - one of our Camp Rover Conference 2024 Speakers.

If you didn’t already know this is something we do with each speaker we bring on; we want to give back to causes that matter to the people that matter to us.

A large group of people pose for a photo with flags and signs showing support for Klinic Community Health.

What does Trans Health Klinic focus on in their efforts to serve the community?

Klinic Community Health provides a full range of health related services from medical care to counselling and education. Driven by our vision of creating healthy and engaged communities, we promote health and quality of life for people of every age, background, ethnicity, gender identity, and socio-economic circumstance. We are located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and are a member of Manitoba Association of Community Health and Canadian Association of Community Health Centres. Rooted in social justice values, we believe that everyone deserves quality care, support and respect. Our care is tailored based on your needs.” - Klinic Community Health (website)

How did Trans Health Klinic come to be?

“Klinic Community Health was founded in the 1970’s through the grass roots efforts of a group of politically active people focused on social justice. There was a pressing need for these services in Winnipeg, and since Klinic was the only place attempting to meet this need, it quickly became identified as a safe and “cool” place by its clients and as a haven for “hippies” by the general public.

Over the years, the agency has seen many changes in terms of size and service focus, but our social justice roots are as deep as ever.” - History, Klinic Community Health (website)

What are the biggest challenges that Trans Health Klinic face?

“We continue to focus on improving the accessibility and the experience of our clients and participants in our programs and services. We were successful in securing funding to address backlogs exacerbated by the pandemic for clients across Manitoba seeking gender-affirming care through our Transgender Health Klinic for adults. This will allow us to double the capacity of our clinics for the next two years, and to create a family practitioner community of practice so clients can access the care they need safely and closer to home.” - 2023 Klinic Annual Report

Do you have a current fundraiser or program you'd like to share with the Camp Rover Community?

“Volunteers have been a critical part of Klinic for many, many years. Volunteers make a huge impact on the amount of calls that we are able to answer on our phone lines, and more recently have also helped provide extra screening and kindness to people visiting our our office.

Klinic is currently accepting new applications to volunteer in our Crisis and Sexual Assault Crisis volunteer programs, as well as our Welcome Volunteer program!” - Volunteers, Klinic Community Health (website)

How can the Camp Rover Community give back to Trans Health Klinic ? What needs do you need to be filled right now?

“Klinic Community Health is a charitable, non-profit organization and we kindly welcome donations from the public. Donations are tax deductible and tax receipts will be issued for donations of $10.00 or more.” - Donate & Support, Klinic Community Health (website)

Any closing thoughts or advice for the Camp Rover Community?

“Klinic Community Health is committed to the values of social justice, equity, accessibility, and care in pursuing its vision of engaged and healthy communities.  On our journey towards Truth and Reconciliation and anti-oppression in all forms, Klinic will work to decolonize systems and practices with cultural humility. Klinic Community Health recognizes that the Social Determinants of Health such as gender, race, employment, economic status, and access to food, clothing, and housing are all important factors that contribute to health and wellbeing. Klinic is committed to building partnerships that address the social determinants of health and promoting universal human rights.” Rights and Responsibilities, Klinic Community Health (website)
