Charity Spotlight Series - Addictions Foundation of Manitoba
Today we’d like to spotlight Addictions Foundation of Manitoba and their efforts in being a foundation of excellence in providing addictions services and supporting healthy behaviours. This charity was selected by Lourdes - of Masagana Flower Farm & Studio - one of our Camp Rover Conference 2024 Flower Friend Panelists.
If you didn’t already know this is something we do with each speaker we bring on; we want to give back to causes that matter to the people that matter to us.
What does Addictions Foundation of Manitoba focus on in their efforts to serve the community?
“AFM employs over 400 staff and provides a wide range of addictions services to Manitobans through 28 locations across the province.
At least 1 in 5 Canadians experience problems with alcohol, drugs or gambling during their lifetime. Many more are affected by someone they care about experiencing these struggles. People of all ages and backgrounds experience these issues – and make positive changes.” - About AFM (website)
How did Addictions Foundation of Manitoba come to be?
“It started in 1956 with The Alcoholics Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) purchasing 124 Nassau Street for offices and an information centre. It established Nassau House, a 15-bed male treatment unit, at 100 Nassau Street. It has been growing and evolving ever since.” - History of AFM (website)
What are the biggest challenges that Addictions Foundation of Manitoba face?
“April 1, 2022 marked the beginning of a new chapter for AFM as our organization began the operational steps to shift certain roles and functions under regional health authorities and transition operational responsibility to Shared Health. This visionary work is a direct result of the planning efforts and engagement initiated through Manitoba’s Health System Transformation initiative and Mental Health & Addictions Strategy.
Our clients and staff will not experience any changes in services or programming, nor how they are accessed as part of this transition. You may start to see the name Shared Health in some of our communications, materials or on our website/social media over the coming weeks and months. These gradual changes are part of our activities to become part of Shared Health.” - Donate, AFM (website)
Do you have a current fundraiser or program you'd like to share with the Camp Rover Community?
“Your generous support of our programming over our legacy has helped many Manitobans with substance use challenges. You have been on this road with us for your own personal reasons and we invite you to continue this journey – together – toward an integrated mental health and addiction services in Manitoba built on care and compassion, recovery and wellness.” - Donate, AFM (website)
How can the Camp Rover Community give back to the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba? What needs do you need to be filled right now?
“AFM will no longer be able to accept donations directly with our operational responsibility transitioning to Shared Health. As a registered charitable organization, Shared Health accepts donations to support various service areas, including its mental health and addictions programs which we will now be part of.” - Donate, AFM (website)
Any closing thoughts or advice for the Camp Rover Community?
“We are excited to share the second edition of the Addictions Foundation of Manitoba Education and Training Catalogue. AFM staff have created this catalogue to build awareness of the education, knowledge exchange and training opportunities available to Manitobans.”- AFM (website)
